Week 2: September 7, 2009
The Blog topic this week has to do with what goes in the HEAD of a Web Page Document. Meta Tags belong in all Web sites, what are they for and why should you use them?
Meta tags go in the head portion of all web page documents. Here you'll place Meta tags, links to CSS coding, robot commands, and much more.
Meta tags are incredibly useful when it comes to web design and search engine optimization. Meta tags include author, description, keyword - and other commands.
With meta tags - the more they relate to your pages content, the higher they rank in the search engines. Search engines rank websites based on inbound links, outbound links, meta tags, content information, length of article, PageRank, website age, and much much more. It's an incredibly complex algorithm they use - but meta tags play a very important role.
Meta tags are put in the HEAD of a page and provide information about each web page. Browser spiders or robots will search through the meta tags and grab information about your site to include in browser search results. You can include information about the author of a page, content and keywords. Robots will use this information to rank your page. You want your site to be available to others to view when they search in a browser, so it is beneficial to use meta tags so that browsers can find and rank your site.
I found the information on Meta Tags to be very interesting. I first heard about Meta tags about 7 years ago when I was working for a small business and we were launching a new website. At that time my understanding was limited to thinking that Meta Tags' only purpose were to help get you a higher position in search engines. It is really useful to know the other information you need to communicate and record on your webpages, especially the author and copyright information.
Meta tags let readers find your pages, so all in all they're probably the most important code on your site! The w3schools.com site reveals that meta tagged information can include the page author, keywords, date the page was last updated, and more. Now on a tangent, is it meta tagged info, or some super powerful robot that lets me find in about 3 seconds all the scores from my days competing with my big herding dog, Hercule? Is anyone else a bit freaked out over how much information is so easily findable online? Now, on to DW to see how this program will magically create all the right code for me and my meta tags. Cheerio.
I first learned about meta tags building one of the veteran sites I work with. I put in information about the Gulf War Exam - and my site went from oblivion to being the 4th site up when you google Gulf War Exam. I don't think it still ranks so high. It really never should have, what it showed me is how little information is out there on the exam!
Meta tags are not seen when viewing a page but are the html info placed within the head of each web page. They provide information for search engines such as keywords and description so the page will match appropriate searches as well as providing authoring and date information.
Meta tags are one of several elements of the head section of a web page and are one of the key elements for search engine optimization. Meta Tags are used by search engines to index the web site (page). Tags are used to optimize placement in the results of a search.
There are many types of meta tags including the following: Meta Description tag, Meta Keyword tag, Meta Language tag, Meta Link Relationship Tag, and Meta Robots Tag. Meta Description is most relevant to search engine optimization. Due to past abuses, the Meta Keyword tag no longer holds the relevance it once did. The Meta Language tag becomes more relevant when the page is multilingual. The Meta Robots tag is used to direct search engines to not index the web page.
Seoconsultants.com and the book “The Truth about Search Engine Optimization” are excellent references for the use of meta tags and their relevance to search engine optimization.
Alright i got these definition straight from our textbook"Web Collection Revealed." I farther researched them on the internet as well. Head content is one of the two main sections of websites besides the body. Head content includes the page title that appears in the title bar of the browser and some important page elements, called meta tags, that are not visible in the browser. Meta tags are HTML codes that include inforfamtion about the page such as the page tiltle, keywords and descriptions. Meta tags are read by screen readers and are also used to provide the server information such as th PICS rating for the page.

Welcome to the Course Blog
I'm trying to make my online class as viable as possible for all students; perhaps this will be a good addition to the course tools.

Sorry for the tangent. :)
