Week 13: November 23 to November 29
BLOG topic Week THIRTEEN: Flash Movie Clips are extremely powerful and flexible objects that have their own Timelines. I've shown you how to make them and by now, you probably have done one of the exercises too. So, tell me what a Movie Clip is and how to see if it is working properly, and why you should possibly make all Flash graphics into Flash Movie Clip Symbols? Bet you didn't see that one coming!

Where are the other bloggers?
OK, Movie Clips. My little timeline-trodden brain notices one nifty thing about movie clips: they run and run forever if you want, and according to their own pace, independent of the master timeline. This is a neat thing, and a possible reason for making every Flash graphic into a movie clip. My gut-level definition of a movie clip: it's a movie that fits onto one frame in the timeline; eminently portable. Another benefit: they keep file size down. That's it for now. Time to restore the gray matter. Could it be put into a movie clip?
Cheerio,

Flash movie clips are really cool, however I'm still a little timid with them. I think that I'm understanding that movie clips as symbols can be part of your library and that flash can load them into your movie, without having to have the entire file reside inside the movie. Similar to sound files, etc. The more small movie clips you create, you can can add them to your library and reuse them in many other movies. The other cool thing is embedding movie clips inside a larger movie (kind of like nesting divs inside of divs)
Movieclips are reusable pieces of animation that have graphics or symbols. They have their own timeline but they play independently from the main movie. I saw a really good illustration of a movieclip as a box within a box so; they are like a flash movie in a flash movie. They can also be saved and reused. I think it takes up less space than keeping it in the main movie.
A movie clip is a symbol with its own timeline. It is stored in the library and is available for unlimited reuse in a Flash document. The movie clips within a movie can only be viewed by double-clicking the symbol in the library, or by publishing or testing the movie.
Making all graphics Movie Clips symbols would allow you to be more efficient. A complex graphic could be reduced to one frame in a movie timeline, thus simplifying the overall movie and reducing file size.
I really liked lsmock's thoughts and comment when she said that the movie clips are like divs within divs. For web developers I think this is a really great way to explain movie clips. Especially for the way my brain thinks and works. :)
