In Exercise 4 you learned how to trace a Bitmap graphic and then turn it into a Vector graphic. After you have worked with these tools you should be able to distinguish the differences between the Fireworks Tools and the Flash Tools. Do you get the connection that exists between the two programs and do you think you can do without using Fireworks of PhotoShop and work directly in Flash?

In this last week to play with your 'finger paints', Fireworks, I've provided exercises that use Disjointed Rollovers and for those of 'stout heart', Multiple Disjointed Rollovers. These exercises are all guaranteed to work ONLY IF YOU KNOW HOW TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY! Yes I know that's not polite to shout but this time it's necessary.

My question this week is simple, WHY?, why even bother to teach this concept? Will it be just for fun or do you think there might be some underlying usefulness involved here?

Fireworks is as graphic programs go, about as easy as it gets to learn; yes, I said that and you're thinking "what planet did he come from?", but it's really true. After you get used to some of the new tools you've probably never have seen before, it does get easier. My question to you this week is, for a real beginner to this stuff, what is the most difficult thing to grasp about the software and/or the exercises? Answer in a fashion that could lead me to developing a method of teaching Fireworks that would be less difficult or daunting to grasp.

This week you are being introduced to a wonderful graphics program aimed at folks just like you. This is not a PhotoShop or Illustrator program, but it is powerful enough to do just about anything you want it to do. There are a few things you'll need to learn, but what the hell, you're in college, aren't you supposed to be learning stuff? What makes Fireworks CS4 powerful is its ability to use Vector Graphics and Bitmap Graphics. Fireworks not only makes graphics to be used in Dreamweaver, but also creates the files that Flash can use as well. Flash is a Vector program, so there it is again, what are the differences between vector and bitmap? Describe them in your own words, if you copy and paste their meanings, you'll learn nothing but how to copy and paste. Why would you want to use one over the other? This is an important feature to learn about and this is the week to start.

Web designers have been able to make interactive Forms with basic form elements for years. Now you have been introduced to those basic elements too. With all the concern over identity theft, asking for personal information could be met with resistance from your visitors. So unless you arrange for a secure Web site at an expense you may not wish to pay for, you must come up with questions that do not compromise your visitors safety.

Finally getting to the point, what can we ask, and what do we really need to know from our visitors on these forms anyway?

This week, for those of you who have at least the Studio 8 version of Dreamweaver or the CS3 version, will have the ability to do some of the Behavior exercises. One of my favorite behaviors is the Drag behavior for DIVs coupled with a timeline activity. What behavior have you tried with success? Can you come up with some ideas to use any of these on one of your pages? Behaviors add a level of interaction to a page, is this a good thing, or bad thing?

This week you are beginning to stretch your new abilities using Dreamweaver to build Web pages. And, in that respect, CSS has been dropped in your lap. I'd like to hear your comments about CSS (Cascading Style Sheets); what are they? What possible benefit will you derive from using them in your Web site? Can CSS help you in your goal to become as accessible as possible on your site? Any of these and other related comments are welcome this week. Think about CSS as your friend?

In your textbook you'll see that Chapter 3 deals with Lists, Intro to CSS, and Images. My exercises centered on Divs verses Tables. (We will get into Cascading Style Sheets soon, and Divs are covered in depth in week four of this class).

I'd like you to discuss your knowledge about placing images into Web pages and Web page background images.

* How do these images affect those people with limited or no vision?
* What can be done to help them know about your images?
* What do you do with Link-button images on the page?
* What if you decide to use background images, how important should that be for those individuals that have no sight?
* If it is intended for only the sighted on the Web, are the vision impaired people being cheated of this feature of yours?

Looking for some gut-level thinking and emotion here; this is not really a go to google to find out thing.

I hear that CS4 dropped the Timeline! What were they thinking? I wonder if this is something that can be added to Dreamweaver from the Adobe site? The Timeline is awesome and a big help getting familiar with the Flash Timelines.

Getting Ready for the FALL 08 Class

Welcome to those who have already found this site and are ready to get going. This Blog was made to serve the needs of the CIS127 Students; this will be a place to get quick answers from anyone involved with the class, not just me. I will be expecting to see participation from everyone weekly in the Blog and it will affect your final grade.
There is a lot to learn this semester, and it will be nice to have a safe spot to go to when something is not very clear for you in the instructions.
More later when we get started.

New VIDEOS Made Today

What a day it has been today! I planned on adding some new videos on Moodle for CIS127 for some time now, and today was to be the day. So of course Murphy's Law has to be part of it too.

I haven't made a video in months and sort of forgot what could go wrong, but not for long. During my complete presentation, 14 minutes long, and I thought pretty well done, I find that it wasn't recording anything; just one really long practice session. OK, so I guess that wasn't so bad, but I thought it was pretty good, and was bummed that no one would ever see it, including me!

So back to square one, I get started and about half way through my big clock start bonging away, it's eleven in the morning so, going to be eleven bongs. I never thought it would stop! Listen closely and you can hear part of the bongs. No sooner than the last bong and a bit of quiet, the phone rings. It's a good friend but I but him off until I was finished, well I thought. A couple of minutes later, the phone rings again, my wife, can't put that call off so I paused the video making for a spell. Finished the call and start making the video again, tested the file server and it decides the reject my file. Only under Murphy's Law! I've never had a file rejected like this before, only while I'm recording it for you, cool! NOT!

Well I relearned about editing videos again today. All in all, it's not that bad, just a little ragged around the edges, and certainly not as bad as the video with all the interuptions. Hey, a few more experiences like this and I can become a pro at this!

Anyway, the videos cover finding your files online and downloading them to your computer. Editing them and uploading to the server. The second video shows you what to do with the homework file named exerDW.html. I think these videos should help most of you and I'd like to hear from you if they have helped.

The Gathering of Students

It's Tuesday evening and I've spent the majority of the day finding my students. Some have never gone through the online process before, so I try to be available for those who might need some help. I've located eight so far, lots more to go.

A major difference exists between online and on ground classes. For on ground classes at a certain time and day of the week, class begins and then in a few hours class ends. For online classes students set the time and day to complete the course assignments. This feature puts a certain pressure on me to be available but not be omnipresent, otherwise I'd be earning the equivilent of 10 cents an hour teaching the class. I do miss the structure of the classroom environment, and actually seeing my students achieving in-person. Well the times are a changing, and I will too. Now, if I could just find the rest of my students.

Thursday before the Spring Semester begins

I spent an extra long time today building new homework templates for Dreamweaver and Fireworks. These templates have a spot for me to make comments about the student work and offer suggestions if needed. I still haven't built the homework sheet for Flash, perhaps tomorrow.
I have created accounts for all of the known students to date, and uploaded the index.html and the two grade sheets. This should help those students unfamiliar with the FTP part of publishing pages to the Web.
We've got a new textbook this year and I wrote a whole bunch of new exercises reflecting the CS3 version of the software. I'm looking forward to seeing what the students can do with this information.

Old Dog New Tricks

I've been setting up this blog today and find it easy and fun to do. My thinking is that some students might be more inclined to respond to a blog instead of a forum posting.
The only important thing is that we communicate with each other, and on a regular basis.
I will try to respond to any postings as I find them and hope it will be of use to the majority of my students.
